One of the first iPhone apps to come out, I think around 2008, was one called "I am Rich." It cost $999.99. It had no functionality, it did nothing more than display a photo of a red jewel on your phone screen to show that you had bought it and thrown $999 away because you could.

People laughed a lot about that, mostly because they couldn't believe that someone would buy the app and spend $999 on something with no real value that was completely useless.
I was thinking earlier while having breakfast that this could be considered today as the precursor to NFTs, which are more or less the same thing.
As a curiosity, take a look at the name of the developer, Armin Heinrich, which sounds very similar to "I am Rich." Maybe Armin Heinrich doesn't even exist and it was all just a publicity stunt by Apple. They say that five people bought the app, three in the United States and two in Europe, before it was removed from the App Store.
